2. Title: “It’s Ok to Not be Ok”: Supporting Children and Teens Mental Health Through the Pandemic

Workshop Description: This workshop will include education about trauma and its impact on mental health in children and teens along with practical tips any adult can use when trying to support a child or teen’s mental health throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic and beyond. It will address the challenging behaviors that may be presenting and healthy ways to help our children and teens find calm, regulation, and comfort during distressing times.

3. Title: CONNECT: A Tool-kit to Help Families Build Resilience

Workshop Description: An introduction to a new resource, through a collaboration of UK Pediatric Forensic Medicine, Face It Movement and Kentucky Safety and Prevention Alignment Network (KSPAN), that focuses on giving concrete tips for helping families build resilience during public health emergencies (and beyond) and how to access community resources.

4. Title: “Substance Use Disorders and the COVID Pandemic: How its Impacting Parents and Families”

Workshop Description: As a result of the COVID pandemic, many individuals across the country have struggled with the effects of increased stress, isolation, and limited access to services. Because of this, we have seen a significant increase in mental health issues, substance use and overdoses across the United States. Additional concerns include the rates of domestic violence, abuse, and neglect experienced in families. This two-hour training will provide attendees with an in-depth review of these negative effects. Specific trends related to substance use and mental health will be reviewed along with a discussion on the impact these trends have had on individuals and families. The importance of appropriate screening, assessment and treatment interventions will also be highlighted.

5. Title: Preventing Child Sexual Abuse in Youth Serving Organizations through Risk Reduction Practices

Workshop description: Summer camps, colleges/universities, athletic organizations, the faith community, and other youth-serving organizations all have a duty to ensure the children and youth they serve are safe while under their care. This training is suitable for youth serving organizations, athletic personnel, after-school programs, summer camp counselors/staff and others. The training covers topics including recognizing and reporting child abuse, strategies for screening and selecting employees and volunteers, strategies for ensuring safe environments and other strategies for protecting children. A planning tool for organizations will accompany the training.
